MOST ONLINE PROGRAMS DO NOT PROVIDE MUCH “TEACHER TO STUDENT” OR “STUDENT TO STUDENT” INTERACTION. HOW IS ICL DIFFERENT?
ICL Academy is the opposite of most online learning platforms that emphasize the student completing robotic ‘busy work’ as opposed to diving deeply into the subject matter. Most other schools lack live teachers to oversee each student’s progress. In contrast, ICL Academy teachers proactively utilize the Learning Management System (LMS) and Student Information System (SIS) to track and gauge student progress with a constant feedback loop. Furthermore, ICL does not believe in ‘zoom fatigue,’ and we do not believe that students need to attend a live-video class for more than 2 hours per day. Instead, ICL employs the flipped classroom model and college-style scheduling of live classes, in order to maximize the time that students are doing schoolwork and to optimize the time that they need to train or pursue their other passions.
PARENTS ARE VERY WORRIED ABOUT ‘SOCIALIZATION’ IN AN ONLINE PROGRAM. HOW HOW DOES ICL ACADEMY DEAL AND EXCEL IN THIS AREA?
Student engagement is at the core of everything ICL Academy does.
• Student engagement is frequently prioritized in discussions amongst teachers and administrators. Students socialize and engage with each other inside and out of the virtual classroom.
• ICL Academy offers numerous projects and clubs on which students collaborate, and ICL academy places students into ‘cohorts’ based on their outside interests to build stronger foundational bonds.
• ICL Academy has created a virtual ‘hallway’ which is an area for students to ‘hang out with each other’ in between classes and other times.
As we know, most people do not tend to make their best friends in class alone. Friendships are usually formed and strengthened through sharing outside interests or by spending time to complete projects together. ICL Academy works the same way!
ICL Academy offers a variety of structured educational approaches that offer personalization in students’ courses of study, allowing students to succeed based on their respective efforts. To support this effort system, ICL Academy grades students based upon a cumulative evaluation of effort and demonstrated evidence of learning, rather than being limited to solely one particular model of achievement.
ICL Academy’s support structure engages our middle and upper schools in the collective efforts for student and teacher success. The tutors in our support structure provide assistance for students to get the help they need. Whether students seek support about an assignment, a course concept, or getting their academic life organized our tutors help provide organization, and communication. Our caring and instructive tutors are part of a positive community that promotes learning for all students.
